I have a forthcoming need for some of the team to go onto the rooves of Portacabins and shipping containers to make repairs.
The suggestion has been to wear a harness and connect to the lifting points on top of the cabins. Some of the cabins have corner points and a central point, some only corner points.
If they are connected to a corner point I am concerned that they will have a long length of lanyard behind them and in the event of a fall from the edge would simply hit the ground.
Anyone got any experience in this area? Is there any simple to erect edge system that could be used rather than the harness?

As you speak of shipping containers, I am presuming that that the floor surfaces are solid in constructon (concrete apron?). Is there a possibility of using an aluminium scaffold tower? This would give safe access, can be located close to the repair area(s)(eliminating the need to wander across roofs from the access point). If repairs are required close to the edge, the work could be carried out from the tower or, if the repairs are within 2 metres of roof/container edges, the tower would offer edge protection. If several repairs are required to one roof/container, then the tower can be moved to the closest point of each repair (the person completing the work should descend from the roof/container after completing each repair and re-asscending when the tower has been moved to the next point). This shoud be written as a Safe System of Work and agreed to by your operatives.

We have now introduced strict working procedures and equipment to support every scenario. I would be interested in swapping notes when you have considered your best approach. Regards Mitch
