BS 4438:1969 Specification for filing cabinets and suspended filing pockets 7 Safety requirements 7.1 The cabinet shall conform to BS EN 14073-2:20042). In addition, the cabinet shall conform to the requirements specified in 7.2 and 7.3. 7.2 Each card holder shall be fitted with a card on which shall be printed in red the word WARNING and notification that the cabinet is likely to topple if: 1) the upper drawer or drawers are loaded and pulled out when the lower drawer or drawers are empty; 2) a second drawer is pulled out before the first drawer is pushed back. 7.3 In order to prevent a cabinet from toppling when the drawers are disproportionately loaded, three holes of 7 mm (0.276 in) diameter shall be provided (one in the back and one in each side) so that the cabinet may be bolted to the wall or to the adjacent cabinet or cabinets. Alternatively, elongated holes of 7 mm (0.276 in) width may be provided to cater for vertical misalignment. With the exception of any extension whose bottom front edge is =?300 mm above the floor, fully extend as many extension elements as possible without overriding the interlocks (if fitted). Open flaps to their horizontal position or as near horizontal as possible. Apply a vertical downwards load of 50N to any point likely to cause overturning, on the centreline of the front of an extension element and at 50 mm from the outer edge of a door or flap. Record whether the unit overturns.
