I'm currently working on production for a large manufacturing company.
I am a safety representative with the trade union and am interested in moving on further up the safety ladder.
Can anyone advise me on the general duties expected of a safety officer in a manufacturing environment?
Has anybody else been in this situation?
What is the best way to go about it?
Any advice would be much appreciated

what kind of relationship do you have with your current safety officer? if you are on good terms, ask them! my last safety officer was a great bloke, full of wisdom and usefull advice. sadly he has now left and i have to deal with a consultant who is impossible to contact (but thats a different story!)
good luck!

I started out as a Union Safety Rep back in 1989 at a chemical manufacturing site and then back in 1995 went into H & S Enforcement where i still am and want to stay.
I had a good working relationship with the Safety Officer at the time and at times got caught in the cross fire between those i represented and management.
I fought the corner for safety regardless of whom i was dealing with......enjoyed safety issues then as i do now...................
Too many Union Safety Reps saw doing the role as a skive-i can say i earnt my crust doing it ( yes i know we got nothing for doing it)but it certainly gave me good experience of poor managt attitude to safety.
Certainly where i worked at the time, they paid more attention to quality of product for the customer than safety.
