Posted By Adam P I'm currently working on production for a large manufacturing company. I am a safety representative with the trade union and am interested in moving on further up the safety ladder. Can anyone advise me on the general duties expected of a safety officer in a manufacturing environment? Has anybody else been in this situation? What is the best way to go about it? Any advice would be much appreciated

Posted By tez I started out as a Union Safety Rep back in 1989 at a chemical manufacturing site and then back in 1995 went into H & S Enforcement where i still am and want to stay. I had a good working relationship with the Safety Officer at the time and at times got caught in the cross fire between those i represented and management. I fought the corner for safety regardless of whom i was dealing with......enjoyed safety issues then as i do now................... Too many Union Safety Reps saw doing the role as a skive-i can say i earnt my crust doing it ( yes i know we got nothing for doing it)but it certainly gave me good experience of poor managt attitude to safety. Certainly where i worked at the time, they paid more attention to quality of product for the customer than safety.
