Posted By P. Moore I was wondering if anyone could help with the below.
Is there any legal requirement for a specific gauge specification of bag to hold asbestos waste collected during a non-licenseable task? I cannot find anything specific, beyond references to heavy duty and robust bags.
Thank you.

Posted By Dave Wilson Not correct.
The disposal of Asbestos waste is classed as Hazardous waste and as such HWRegs and ADR (Carriage of DG Applies!
You must use UN Approved waste bags which must be certified as such and double bagged.
If it cannot be double bagged it must be double wrapped in 1000 gauge polythen and sealed so as to prevent the release of fibres.
If you are carrying over 1000kg of Packaged white or 500kg packaged Blue / browm then the driver must be ADR trained and the vehicle must display the orange rectangle and a 'Tremcard'in the vehicle as well as the correct fire extinguiser etc.
Do not think that you can wrap this in any old bin liner etc.

Posted By Dave Wilson And the bags must not be overloaded and the max weight is displayed on the bag as this is what the manufactures UN classification is for. eg the bags been tested to this standard

Posted By P. Moore Thank you for this.
Which particular regulation states the gauge of the bag and the need for UN approval?

Posted By P. Moore Thank you Dave.
I have had a look through this information, but can only see reference to the need for correct labelling and nothing on the gauge of the bags.
Have I missed something?

Posted By Dave Wilson Because this is Haz waste and as such you have to use 'Approved UN packaging' under Dangerous Goods Regs / ADR for the movement of any DG's.
Therefore approved UN Asbestos waste bags or 1000 gauge poly is required for the movement of Asbestos Waste.
As usual the HSE / EA / VOSA do not cross reference their requirements

Posted By M Abrar No specification is given in the Regs or the ACoP, other than the need for the bags to be suitable. Suitable means able to retain the waste without being breached throughout their use, handling and transportation.
The usual practice is for bags to be of at least (which usually means no more than!) 1000 guage thickness.
If the waste (or the way the bags are handled) is liable to puncture the bags, then additional precautions will be needed (e.g. covering sharp edges before bagging).
Hope this helps.

Posted By Chas I may be going off on a tangent slightly, but I remember a prosecution sometime ago where a supplier of asbestos waste bags was taken to court for supplying inferior (non UN)bags. I cannot remember the name of the supplier or any more details of the case and a trawl of the HSE prosecutions database revealed nothing, however someone in the asbestos world may know more.
