How do you test heat detectors? Is the answer obvious or is there a piece of kit you need to do it safely?

There are specialised pieces of kit available to test both heat and smoke detectors in situ. They are basically a safe smoke or heat generator on a long pole. See http://www.protectingpeo...r_testing_pole/index.htm as an example (Other suppliers and brands are available).

We used to use a hair dryer on a stick. Not exactly scientific but so long as you didn't have to melt the plastic casing before it went off.

Tested one per zone per month. This, in general, meant that every detector was tested at least once per year.

Same schedule for break-glass boxes.

Thanks for the help.

Looking at the options presented I expect that I'll be in Comet next week buying a hair dryer and then to the B&Q for a paint roller extension pole.

I use this as part of my FA test kit.
Not cheap but best available IMO.

I think they are trade only though so you may need to find a distributor if your not trade.

Hope that helps.
