Posted By Robert S Woods How do you test heat detectors? Is the answer obvious or is there a piece of kit you need to do it safely?

Posted By James Dudding There are specialised pieces of kit available to test both heat and smoke detectors in situ. They are basically a safe smoke or heat generator on a long pole. See http://www.protectingpeo...r_testing_pole/index.htm as an example (Other suppliers and brands are available).

Posted By Merv Newman We used to use a hair dryer on a stick. Not exactly scientific but so long as you didn't have to melt the plastic casing before it went off.
Tested one per zone per month. This, in general, meant that every detector was tested at least once per year.
Same schedule for break-glass boxes.

Posted By Robert S Woods Thanks for the help.
Looking at the options presented I expect that I'll be in Comet next week buying a hair dryer and then to the B&Q for a paint roller extension pole.
