Posted By JGRL I am trying to build a new consultancy business and am finding it a slow and (at times) frustrating process. I have not advertised but have been doing direct marketing mailshots to companies from various industrial sectors - not done any follow ups with phone calls etc. Usually for every hundred of those you are fortunate if you get replies from only a couple but I would like to improve my accuracy and ratio of replies to mailings. I would appreciate replies from those who have been successful in building their own consultancies from scratch into successful practices. Personally I have found some negative responses over this kind of thing on this board due to 'competition' etc but what doesn't have competition? Look forward to some suggestions. Regards

Posted By Nick Higginson Hi there I have been running my own consultancy for 2 years now. Forget direct marketing. Mailshots don't work. We have recently upgraded to advertising in SHP and Health & Safety at Work - expensive and not very effective so far. Best routes have been word of mouth from clients, a good website, yell.com (especially sponsored listings) and google adwords. It's been a slow process, but we are seeing the benefits now. HSENI have a bit on their website for training providers which is free and a number of people found me through that: http://www.hseni.gov.uk/...training_providers-2.htm I don't know that HSE(GB) do something similar though. Where I live we have a centre that helps people starting up their own businesses, and they also let you put your business cards in their reception. Again, free. KT
