Driver & Forktruck Drivers Medical Assessments

Posted By KevinO'Brien Is it good practice to require that medicals are undertaken for all drivers over 45 and before every three year refresher or is it a responsible activity ( I know it's not legislation). Added to that, who should pay-the company or employee? grateful for the advice.

Posted By Clare Gabriel To be honest the majority of companies put all their drivers through a medical regardless of age - duty of care...!!!
The Company would have to pay for those medicals unless the people were temps when they should come with medical verification of fitness to drive and have their up to date licence to drive the type of truck you have on your premises.
there is very good guidance by the HSE on training and use of forklift truck which you should obtain - and whilst as you identify it is the 'older ' driver who needs a medical it does tell you the sort of thing they should be tested for and you can apply it to all your drivers.
Our Company does an annual medical check on all drivers just to ensure that if there was an incident it is another box covered and when you think of what they do it is a literally a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Posted By David Bannister Claire, I would qualify your response by adding "good" before companies. In my experience the majority of companies do not put their drivers through medicals, only the ones that are serious in their management of risk. It is good practice, to be commended and an excellent tool for predicting and preventing future problems.

don't fall into the ageist trap as its against the law
we undertook an exercise where all people who had the potential of undertaking a specific work activity were given a series of medicals and fitness tests. Up to that point all people over 45 had to be tested however the law changed the age situation
In all cases those under 45 FAILED [yes FAILED] the tests and all people above 45 PASSED the tests
Makes you think does it not!
