Hi All,

This posting will probably only appeal to a small portion of the readership who understand the ultimate freedom and joy of two wheels, a torquey engine and the phrase 'keeping it pinned'. If this is you, read on........

I got my copy of SHP today and it is a most interesting edition discussing the trend toward risk aversion and the hostility toward us 'Talibanistas'. I applaud IOSH's campaign to engage the Conkers argument head-on and some time back, there was a call for IOSH members who have particularly hazardous hobbies/pastimes to step forward, following that stuntman chappy's write-up, but does anyone fancy upping the ante?

I'm a CMIOSH who is rather addicted to my motorcycle from European touring to commuting and in recent years hooning around on well organised training-based track days (Cadwell Park is spiritual land in my eyes). In my opinion, good riding is a demonstration of excellent risk management, plus I don't do it as a job so there are no incompatibilities to juggle with!!

Are there any fellow sufferers out there?

Anyone fancy an 'unofficial' IOSH trackday? With a reputable training company (of course) - Rapid Training or Hopp (i.e. hooligan-free). Cadwell, Brands Hatch...wherever? Obviously, next year when the weather improves of course.

I say unofficial because if we all get through the day unharmed*, I'll write an article for SHP!

Get in touch!

John Mack
(CMIOSH, Rospa 'Smartie' and Triumph Daytona rider)

* 'unharmed' includes offs that don't require paramedic assistance and walking wounded!!

Just like to point out that it was alcohol that probably finished him. Motorcycles never could (they're far safer).

Needs to be done! If IOSH can sponsor a conker championship, then we can at least have an "offical" event. There is a lot of safety involved in making it happen as opposed to making it not happen.

I vote for Snetts, have a picture of me running myself over with a 250 lc coming out of the bomb hole and only hurt myself when I fell of the tyre wall!

ZX6 or RSV waiting, keep posting...

Hi John
I am also a fellow biker and often hear the phrase "you ride a motorbike and your a health and safety officer!!"
I consider my self a careful rider and always assess the conditions before I go out (must admit fair weather rider only)
When I was taking my lessons the instructor gave me a good peice of advice " always assume every one on the road is out to kill you!"
It may seem extreme but it made me concentrate alot harder!

Sounds like a great plan, I've just thrown my YZF1000 T'Ace down the road; the plastics are done in but the engine, frame and forks are all a ok. My friend and i are planning to convert her into a track bike soon. So I'm well up for it....

Fantastic - Count me in. Glad that I am not the only safety guy who is addicted to bikes ! I agree with the point that good quick riding is an excellent example of risk management in action !

Donnington is good for me . . . GP circuit would be good (Ron Haslam day is very good)

As a big ol Harley rider I'd struggle to keep up, although she is in this winter for a 1740cc screamin eagle conversion. I particularly enjoy assisting new young riders as a volunteer at our local rider training centre and you can count me in as it would be a pleasure to meet the horn rimmed glass wearing leather elbow patched clipboard holding fellow H&S aficionado's that are bikers!

Sadly, I gave up my GSX1100 a few years ago (is it really 14yrs since I rode it !?!) otherwise I would be there with you. I used to love track days.

Not sure my current shape is as aerodynamic enough for anything less than 1500cc LOL

As for the racing leathers I used to wear ... I doubt they could take the strain, ha ha.

I hope it happens, and I hope you all enjoy it!

My hobby could be fairly dangerous, if it wasn't for all the training we do (Viking battle re-enactment).

If its a call for all motorbikers then I am up for a day motocrossing or an enduro!

IOSH could put an enduro team together - would demonstrate that not all practitioners are wrapped in cotton wool, particually when you see how far I can wheelie.

Sadly I no longer have my fabulous VTR. I am up for a trackday, on or off tarmac, as long as I can rent a machine. There are one or two companies that do this for people wishing to try if anybody else fancies a try.

I did write in and make the suggestion that our previous leader should do a parachute jump! But it must have got lost in the spam filter.

Excellent idea! I'd be up for some of this. Any of the previous locations are OK though if I had a choice I'd go for Brands, have always fancied giving that hairpin a go. I've just organised a Bikesafe day for one of my clients in London. After a year of trying to get them to attend "normal" H&S training with very poor results this is one course that is going to be over subscribed, and we are doing it February! I ride all year and frequently use the bike to visit clients and training courses, it certainly makes a talking point if it all goes quite.

Phew! Thank heavens!

I thought I was going to be 'johnnie-no-mates' for a day or so!

So far, the responses have been in favour of Brands Hatch or Donnington, with one Snetterton fan. Bikes range from a Hog to an XR 400.

Given the diversity of 'RIOSH' members out there, I would suggest that we try for something 'all inclusive'. Track events can be a little intimidating at first and so an event run by a reputable training firm would be good.

I did a track-based training day* last year that basically catered for all types of bike and rider (Harleys do go round corners! Sort of). It was excellent and completely hooligan-free.

The morning was spent in small, instructor-led groups (ducks and drakes fashion) learning the lines and getting to really know your bike. The afternoon was given over to the more traditional novice / intermediate / advanced groups and everyone had a blast.

Looks like I need to do some research.....I'll be in touch!

John Mack

Just if you have time to browse later, I have used both the following:
*www.hoppridertraining.co.uk - very competent, unintimidating and enjoyable day.

http://www.rapidtraining.co.uk/e/tracking.htm.

Rapid Training are run by serving and ex-coppers including Andy Morrison and Gary Baldwin who regular feature in the bike press. Instruction on the day is ace and part of the deal.

I'll have a go at this as well. Donnington would be great to give the Fireblade a good run!

Out of our Safety Team we have one Fireblade, one GSXR600, one Street Triple and the boss has a Tiger Kit car that can keep up with anything up to 100 (not on the roads of course.....)

I've no idea what a lot of this means (on the bike specs) but I've also wanted a shot on a real bike - having many moons ago had a 'step through' Honda 70cc.

I say - go fot it - sounds like a good day out to me

Donnington for me would be ideal.

Just need to convince the boss (her indoors) that a new set of downpipes is essential to the continued success of our marriage (not having much luck at the moment, something about selling bike and good idea keeps being banded around).

I did a slow riding skills day with Martin Hopp and several people I know have done track based training days with him that have been excellent so I'd be happy to go with him. I'm on an R1200RT that can keep with most sports bikes in the lanes unless piloted by track gods or lunatics. :-)) Looking forward to it already -:))

P.S. The slow riding day was really challenging and has helped both slow and fast riding.

Hi Mack,

I'd love to add to the diversity.
Buell xb12r firebolt, with Remus race can.
Can't wait to hear it at full chat!

Have you considered Croft?
It's only a couple of miles off the A1 at Scotch Corner.
The facilities are brill, & the costs are considerably cheaper than more famous circuits.

Just a thought...................

Hi folks

Me too, I'll bring a couple of us down. But in the continued effort to stand out, I'll bring the trike and pose without a lid! It freeks the H&S peeps who have no sense of humour out big time!

I've even been known to put lipstick on at traffic lights. LOL.

Ooo and the guy who made my trike is building the worlds fastest road legal trike. We could really get some PR going then!

Hey Dave,

I got a Buell XB12 too, with a race system and chip, I was intending to take my crash damaged YZF1000 Thunderace (if I can get some plastics on it in time) but I may bring the Buell, just rather worried about crashing it .... But what the hey, why not?

Hi All,

Blimey, what have I started? Plenty to go on eh?

Feel free to email me directly so I can collate details too...

Dave, I've heard Croft's pretty good, but I'm not sure the injection on the Daytona can function on such low oxygen levels that far north ;-)

If you are a motorcyclist and an elfnsafety type - you qualify as being Clarkson's arch enemy so I think the James May / Hamster angle may be quite good fun.

Also, Martin Hopp usually does a RoSPA / IAM day, this may fit the bill.....

That's the spirit Jon...........

What an aural treat.

A brace of open-piped Buell & CFT's Screaming Eagle piped 1740 should just about drown out Clarksons' bleat.

Oh dear, we'll be in contravention of the Control of Noise & Vibration Regs. 89/05.

Croft's almost central UK.
This will benefit Scottish/Irish riders wishing to take part...................
Will the Beeb travel though?

I think this is a brilliant idea, and yes I'm sure the Beeb would travel.

Sadly I've never ridden a motorbike so can't contribute in that way, but I will volunteer to be someone's biker chick.

(I'd also like to add that I'm not a total wuss in the higher-risk activities myself, I used to go caving when I was younger, thinner and fitter.)

Hi, I may only hold the lowly rank of TechIOSH but I to am an avid biker. Never done a track day (Croft is my nearest). I'm of the same opinion that 'us' motorcyclists need to manage risk every time that we take to the roads, more so that cage (oops sorry!!!) car drivers.
