Posted By shaun mckeever Mitch you wrote in a previous thread which has now been locked:- 'At the risk of prompting a barbed response it seems the difference of opinion is the perception of what is required by a fire RA. My understanding (with limited experience!) is that a Fire RA under the recent Reg's is to identify and control the causes and consequences of a fire? Some inference is given to "fire engineering" etc, surely this is the responsibility of the designer/architect, I made dammed sure it was in our new build! An assessment has to be carried out reasonably practicably not every employer, landlord has the knowledge or resources to consider building design, fire behaviour, or perhaps I have misunderstood and I am simplifying too much? Your comment would be appreciated as I completed my companies fire RA!!!!' What you have said is important and deserves a response. You seem to suggest that you do not need to understand fire behaviour or building design with respect to fire safety. I say it is absolutely critical that you understand fire behaviour to carry out a fire risk assessment. In fact when questioned during the Parliamentary process when the RRO was being discussed Deputy Chief Fire Andy Marles gave the following response to his definition of competency of persons carrying out FRA's - ‘They have to have an understanding of fire, the way fire behaves, the way that building reacts to fire, so they can understand the risks that are created’. If you don't understand fire behaviour or the fire strategy how else will you know that occupants may be at risk, particularly in remote parts of the building.

Posted By GeoffB4 Moderator, I suggest this is an attempt by an aggrieved contributor to carry on a locked thread and should be removed.

Posted By Mitch Shaun, Thanks for your response, I did not intend to suggest anything I was merely seeking clarification as there seems to be 2 schools of thought on this and related threads (as in most subjects debated on this forum). As I originally said perhaps I have over simplified the intention of the Reform Reg's, I work in a medium sized open workshop, small stores with mezzanine floor 2 storey office block (6 offices) and large industrial warehouse. No remote rooms (though no fire escape form upstairs offices!). I think it's time for a review!! Mitch
