Posted By Baskaran Kumarasamy Hi All, I need to do a Risk Assessment for operating a boiler unmanned. Our boiler has all the necessary automatic controls, remote alerting and shut down facility etc.. But still I am concerned to leave it unattended. Does anyone carried out risk assessment? If yes, Could you mind forwarding your risk assessment to me? or please share your opinion. Regards, Baskey

Posted By andymak Is this a particular type of boiler for a specialist purpose? I only ask as most building heating systems now have unmanned boiler houses and often a remote management system looking after them and the system.

Posted By John A Wright Unmanned boilers do pose risks. As an installation their running and maintenance come under PUWER, so a risk assessment should consider or record that the location is suitable, maintenance procedures are adequate, maintenence staff are competent, a maintenance logbook is kept up to date, the boiler is secure so staff are kept away, the controls are ID and labelled, that there is a shutdown/start-up procedure. Posted By Baskaran Kumarasamy Thanks Andy, Bob and John for your responses. Andy, Ours is a steam boilers with 7bar pressure for which strict regulations apply. I think, you assumed as hot water boilers. Bob, Yes, we did consult our insurers , suppliers and operating staff, however every one points to the direction of risk assessment. They all say that it should be based on the risk assessment! Hence I am concerned. John, I will definitely consider all the points you mentioned in my risk assessment. Very useful points. Cheers, Baskey
