A good introduction can be found in HSE INDG315(rev1) - free to download at http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg315.pdf
I am a consultant occupational hygienist and could assist you with personal exposure monitoring for RCS, statutory examination & testing of LEV systems and control measure advice. e.g. appropriate PPE & RPE. Please contact me 'off forum' should you require any further assistance.

Back to the specific situation, I assume that you would be cutting with a cut-off saw, probably petrol engined, if so the HSE have produced guidance for this very task it is in video and print format see these links:
http://www.hse.gov.uk/co...on/cleartheair/index.htm
http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/misc830.pdf
In essence when carrying out this task use water suppression AND wear a P3 mask (and have waterproof trousers on).
Hope this helps.
