Seen as everyone is in a light banter mood (the nuts thread has had me giggling a number of times) I wondered whether other people here take part in dangerous hobbies?
According to a colleague of mine we are all far to boring to do interesting dangerous hobbies - personally I think every safety officer should have one to prove the doubters wrong.
Personally I horse ride and spend time teaching young kids to shoot and occassionaly ride motorbikes.

We don't need dangerous hobbies, walk on a site and tell a builder that he is not doing something in a safe manner.

I'm a Blackburn Rovers fan, not so much of a physical danger, but in terms of mental stress and despair...well...its up there with the most stressful things around.

I do, or have done, judo (3rd Dan), karate (1st Kyu), tae kwondo (2nd kup), aikido (3rd kyu).
People argue with me a lot. However, I don't think most of them know about my hobbies.

Hmmm im noticing a theme of martial arts within the industry. The first of my NGC tutors turned out to be a black belt in at least one of them and I have met many since.

Am a member of the uk airsoft team - plastic bb's being fired from replica rifles, smoke and flashbang grenades (all suitable for civillian use).
Am also involved with a bushcraft school, oh the joy when students get hold of a knife they all think ther'e rambo, something that we quickly dissuade them of.

Nothing like, after a hard week telling everyone how to be safe, being thrown 6 feet in the air by a man mountain!

I did read somewhere that people in highly controlled safe working activities/jobs are more likely to under take high risk activities outside of work, speed when driving, do extreme sports, take other personal risks.
I myself do a lot of rock climbing and mountain biking.
Sounds like a good topic for a Msc project :-)

A couple of years back I went across Kenya on a push bike, sleeping in a two man tent every night. One night we were attacked by dogs, another night a snake as long as a washing line came to visit us. There were times when I thought it was too dangerous. Not bad for an old H&S man.

D-I-Y?
Just take a look at what you can buy in a DIY store, then ask yourself how many risk assessments you have done on these.
Paint stripper:- blend of methylene chloride and methanol. Wonderful stuff - just look at the risk phrases! Used to splash this about with gay abandon in enclosed spaces, e.g. bilges of boat, until I started to learn about chemicals and hazards!
I did think of asking the local B&Q where they stock their Viton gloves, then thought better of it!

I'm in the Sea Cadet Corps - I do weapons instruction and range control, as well as boating activities, campcraft and expeditions and other associated Adventure Training tasks. Cadets also participate in physical games such as football and indoor hockey.
We are very up on Risk Assessments etc to make the Corps safety oriented, with a dedicated H&S Manual along with the main Regulations, Training Instructions and not forgetting the Naval Cadet Forces "bible", the TARS - Training Afloat and Safety Regulations, which governs everything we do while waterborne.

If you do a forum search using the key words "bikers" or hobbies", you will find a number of previous "interesting" debates on this subject with dozens of contributions.
I personally am afraid of heights, dogs and horses, have never sat on the seat of a motorbike in my life, am a very poor swimmer, get travel sick, am a control freak, have no sense of adventure, and have been a complete nonentity for the past 46 years!! Not that it bothers me though!!

Drag my derriere up mountains, rocks faces have colleagues who throw themselves out of planes (too much for me). Once, when I was an SAC (lowest denominator in the RAF),I used the word 'stupid' in a sentence when discussing a Senior Officer's idea - very dangerous!

Hi all.
I'm afraid I'm just another risk averse safety bore..........
Boxed for 20 years. 5 x broken nose, numerous broken hands/fingers, 1 broken jaw, 4 teeth lost, eye damage......oh, and on hanging up my gloves had facial surgery to restore my devastating good looks!....moved on to mountain biking and very quickly broke my right leg in two places.....got the leg pinned back together and now pursue the much safer sport of motorcycle racing (1 year )....1 broken wrist and shoulder incident so far. I only feel safe when i'm at work! (top tier COMAH environment)

I suppose you would include destruction derby banger racing as a "dangerous hobby". Ive only had 2 accidents in 5 years that have required medical attention

What an interesting thread. Am getting the impression most of us "Safety People" have some frustrations to release. I too have been involved in various martial arts for a fair few years now and train most days. Am also fond of a bit of motocross, snow boarding, the odd bungee and basically anything I can do that has a high risk of injury to myself... We should know better but hey, that's half the fun.
Keep it up ladies and gents.
