When a risk phrase is given like R10 = Flammable and a safety phrase is given like S24/25 = Avoid contact with skin and eyes, I understand the R and S equate to risk and safety phrases.
But what does the J stand for say in J4 = contains white spirit?

Paint industry reference codes, means what it says. J37 = solvent based paint. Do not know the actual answer to what the J stands for, these codes appear to have been developed by ICI paints/Akzo Nobel.

Thamks Redkin. But why 'J' if its soley used by the paint industry surely a letter 'P' would have been more appropiate?

Hi Badger

I think that it originates from the Canadian Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System which came in in 1989(legislation dated 1988 I think). Have a look at

http://www.chemistry.mcm...;safety/safety/htm/j.htm

Where it appears that section J contains the responsibilities for MSDS'.

Have a look at http://www.assembly.nl.c...Regulations/rc961149.htm and see within section 2 Definitions, the delineations under j, s and r. This appears to be derived legislation from the above.

Cheers

Martin
