Can anybody provide a simple comparison between the Risk/Health phrases used in the new GHS system and the equivalent in CHIP.
I am starting to get new MSDS sheets through and am in the process of changing our COSHH assessments to reflect the changes.

The Hazard Statements in CLP regulation do not seem to correspond exactly with the old Risk Phrases, so a direct translation would appear not possible. You can download the CLP regulations from the Internet and this (all 1355 pages) contains a listing of all the hazard, precautionary and other statements.

Thanks Chris, I'm working on a nearest fit. I'm quite surpirised that nothing has changed on the HSE Website on COSHH and particularly EH40 to reflect the changes

Chris
That is correct :(
I was on a COSHH assessment course for mixtures with Sypol and they explained the great news that you can't substitute one picture for another! Back to the drawing board for all COSHH assessments.... But wait new symbols / hazard phrases don't have to be issued until 2014 or something for mixtures but sooner for pure chemicals...
Also something with a R phrase may not have a Hazard phrase, also something flammable may change to a different class of flammable!!!
So until the change we have two systems... ARGHHHHHHHHHH
And America and Canada are still using their own so can we really call it Global?????
Is it Friday yet?

It doesn't appear so as all the EU phrases are specific to the european union.
The other problem is new substances to the market have to use the new packaging so we are already seing the new MSDS sheets.

In most cases, the change from CHIP 3 (Old) to CLP (new) should not result in wholesale COSHH re-assessments for substances, because the MSDS's must have the old style Risk & Safety Phrases up to June 2015 and also, with some minor exceptions, the Hazard Categories that CLP has taken from GHS almost mirror the old ones.
Yes, there is change in labelling, but that should not result in changes to the hazard categories as such.

Hi,
If you go to the CLP regulation, right at the end in Annex VII there is a translation table from Risk phrase to Hazard statement, quite a few have "no direct translation possible" though. It is correct that the new labels/SDS's (in terms of showing CLP symbols and phrases) are only required for pure substances at the moment with mixtures to follow in 2015, but some companies are not waiting, and are using the new system for all products including the mixtures.

Tms,
For SUBSTANCES, from 1st December 2010 to 1st June 2015, suppliers must classify substances according to both CHIP and CLP, but they must label and package according to CLP only.
From 1st June 2015 onwards, suppliers must classify and label substances according to CLP (old DSD/CHIP classifications disappear entirely)
For MIXTURES (Preparations) w.e.f. 20th January 2009 to 1st June 2015, suppliers can continue to classify, label and package according to CHIP (DPD). However they may, as an alternative choose to classify, label and package mixtures according to CLP. In this case, they must in addition continue to classify under CHIP (for MSDS), but the requirements for labelling and packaging of CHIP no longer apply, (i.e they must do it as per CLP)
Form 1st June 2015 onwards, suppliers must classify, label and package according to CLP only (old CHIP/DPD classifications disappear

Thanks for all the information so far. The posters are particular useful and we have had a real breakthrough in understanding the relationships with the different phrases.

Jay,
unfortunately a few MSDS sheets we have received are already dropping chip and going with CLP.

John,
The CLP (new version MSDS) in Section 2 MUST have both classifications (CLP & CHIP 3), otherwise the supplier is in breach of the CLP regulations.
Yes, Section 2 will only have the new pictograms, but it must include the old classification.
Refer to an example of such an MSDS from Fisher-Scientific

Jay,
to be honest I'm just glad that they've taken the time to put the appropriate information on. Some of the MSDS sheets I've recieved in the past have been so vague I'd have been better of guessing.
Having spent 3 hours today studying the guidance we are well on the way to be able to amend our current COSHH system to account for the new requirements but we would have been at it a lot longer without the help from this forum so thanks again,
John
