Hi there,
I orginally intended to move to Austraila, however i now have decided Canada may be the best option. My education is that i have a MSC. in Occupational Health and Safety and Ergonomics and i have 6 years experience in the construction sector in Ireland. I am alos working towards my chartered memebership of IOSH. My question is are there any additional requirements that i have to have to work as a safety officer in Canada, toronto preferable.
Thanks for the help in advance

Hi trevtotrev,
It sounds like you have some excellent credentials in health and safety. I am a Canadian and have been working in the field oh&S for 8 years. I would say that in general your qualifications would be enough to get you some position within Canada. The CMIOSH designation MAY not make too much of a difference at this point, only because there is only marginal awareness of what it represents. In Canada the most visible credential is the CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional). This designation requires formal education, experience in health and safety, a successful screening interview and a passing grade on a comprehensive exam. Other credentials include the NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) which is a junior designation and the CSC (Construction Safety Coordinator - Gold Seal) which is a more senior safety designation. Both of these are specific to the construction industry. There is also the CHSC (Certified Health and Safety Consultant) that has recently undergone an overhaul to add more credibility to the designation.
I would be happy to share any more information with you including some great job hunting resources.
All the best,
Mustang

Trev,
We are just in the process of finalising an MoU with the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals which will allow a CMIOSH exemption from the initial assessment requirements for entry to this register. You will still have to do the examination for entry. (A similar process works for Canadian professionals wanting to join IOSH).
So the best thing to do at this stage is complete your IPD and move to CMIOSH so you would be eligible for the arrangement if you need to get CRSP.

Trev,
If you choose the CRSP route, I have some resources and study guides that would help in preparation for the exam.
Cheers,

Hi Mustang,
Please could you forward me the same resources and study guides for the CRSP exam studies? I will really appreciate it.

Hi trevtotrev,
I am also looking at getting a safety job in Canada, preferably in B.C. as I have family (my sister) already living there. I've only just starting making initial enquries into the immigration process, and was wondering where to begin. The official Canadian immigration website is confusing at best. As it sounds like you're a bit further on than me, what kind of visas do you need to apply for in order to work out there? I have about 7 years experience working in Health and Safety with 5 in the construction industry and the other 2 in manufacturing. I have the NEBOSH diploma and am currently GradIOSH status with the intention of attaining CMIOSH.
Any suggestions of visa consulting companies or other sources of info would be helpful.
Regards,
Dan
