I work on the uk highwways in Traffic management. Working as a tsco i see allsorts and seem to work in an industry full of potential catastophies. Anybody else have any experience and how do we go about stopping this closed ranks mentality?

Hi Erebus Although i am no longer involved in the road maintenance industry, I have over ten years experience of working on the trunk roads and motorways in the north east of England. ( MAC Contracts etc ) In my time I have encountered 3 fatalities of TM operatives. As stated below the silence is consent DVD has been utilised regarding near misses which did have quite a positive impact although it is a constant battle because TM lads are a hard bunch to get your point across to - The thing is they are up against it every time they go out to work and become comfortable with the risk. It is a very difficult industry to try and administer change. In recent years though there has been quite an innovative approach to the industry with new SSOW and plant and materials ( sequential lights, light arrows, cushions, cone laying machines, VMS etc ) But as you point out the major hurdle which is faced is the lads AND driver attitudes. Acceptance of the risk and acceptance that the TM lads know that they are at the mercy of the driving public.... Difficult industry but i am positive it could be manged a lot better Regards AS
