I work on the uk highwways in Traffic management.
Working as a tsco i see allsorts and seem to work in an industry full of potential catastophies.
Anybody else have any experience and how do we go about stopping this closed ranks mentality?

Hi erebus,

Have you had the DVD 'Silence is Consent'. Available about 18 months ago, free as I recall. It deals with near misses and the limited reporting experienced thereof.

We use it in a shipyard, along with a new reporting system which is gaining momentum.

Hi Erebus

Although i am no longer involved in the road maintenance industry, I have over ten years experience of working on the trunk roads and motorways in the north east of England. ( MAC Contracts etc ) In my time I have encountered 3 fatalities of TM operatives. As stated below the silence is consent DVD has been utilised regarding near misses which did have quite a positive impact although it is a constant battle because TM lads are a hard bunch to get your point across to - The thing is they are up against it every time they go out to work and become comfortable with the risk. It is a very difficult industry to try and administer change. In recent years though there has been quite an innovative approach to the industry with new SSOW and plant and materials ( sequential lights, light arrows, cushions, cone laying machines, VMS etc ) But as you point out the major hurdle which is faced is the lads AND driver attitudes. Acceptance of the risk and acceptance that the TM lads know that they are at the mercy of the driving public.... Difficult industry but i am positive it could be manged a lot better

Regards

AS

Today I observed two different mobility scooter drivers [2 different events] push through the cones that had been put in place by the road planning lads and they also gave the lads loads of abuse when they tried to stop them ------- its also the public culture that we have to try to manage; a task that we will never achieve

The lads just stopped work as it was no good trying to argue nor stop them & I [even with my experience as I should have known better] tried to have a reasonable chat with the mobility people after they had gone through the workings and was given the same type of abuse
