All,
Just wondering if anyone had ever used/purchased this document which provides guidance on fire safety in buildings?
I am a H&S Manager for an organisation with a 16 acre manufacturing site, but we are also a landlord who own and rent out several industrial units and a few domestic properties.
Thanks

Does the document provide anything of value/ is it worth purchasing?
I have used the docs at communities.gov site, just wondered if the BS provides anything worthwhile on top of this.

All parts of BS5588 have been withdrawn.
The replacement is BS9999:2008 Code of practice for fire safety in buildings.
Its 459 pages and costs £308 or £154 to non members/members of BSi
It is a pretty comprenhensive document and looks to give lots of supporting/further information that is not covered in the usual HM Government guidance.
I would think the key point are repeated in the HM Gov guidance.
Probably worth getting if your key interest is fire safety.
In my view with respect to fire safety, there is actually probably TOO much guidance available - which guidance do you follow?
RRFSO - legal requirement Building Regs - legal requirement HM Government practical guides Endless British Standards Industry specific Standards Internal company standards US/NFPA standards (in the oil & gas industry) Insurance company requirements
etc etc
Less is more!!

I believe that 5588 part 12 was the best part of the whole suite of 5588 documents. If it's just guidance on the management of fire safety you are after and you already have 5588-12, I would not buy 9999 as well as you will get much of the same management stuff again.
It's a pity that BSI felt the need to combine so much of 5588 into one huge and hugely expensive volume as it's price does put many SMEs off from buying it.
Mind you, it's a great cash cow, as when they revise the document in a couple of years, ker-ching! - another lot of £300s will be coming in to the BSI coffers. What a great business to be in!

Thanks Have you considered PAS 79 - Fire Risk Assessment? This may help when carrying out the RA...
