Just out of interest, how many of your 3 day FAW providers are doing annual refreshers as in the spirit of the qualifications "strong recommendations"

Thanks

We don't either Im afraid. Im only just getting them to start annual Fire Awareness training so maybe in the future but cant see management accepting the extra time off for First Aiders.

Adding to the chorus: we don't do annual refresher for our FAWs.

No, its hard enough trying to organise time away from the job every three years

We started offering the refreshers this year and have had a 73% uptake. We are fortunate that we have an in-house instructor but the courses last only 3 hours and the feedback from attendees has been very encouraging.

Thanks for all of the replies, it's interesting how many posters are following the "strong recommendations" and the spirit of the reduced 3 day qualification.

We dont but should a first aider express that they feel they need a refresher then I would fully support them on this.

We offer them to anyone who wants to take up the offer - not mandatory - and save fees for non attendance.

We run an annual AED 3hr refresher that is mandatory for all FAAW personnel.

We do (for all) but we are an approved training provider and first aider trained staff are 'strongly encouraged' by our admin to undertake the refresher training.

We do.

I think it all depends on what you're wanting to achieve....IMO someone who requalifies every 3 years may remember what to do with a bleed, they might remember some of the steps of CPR, maybe even get the recovery position right, but they're unlikely to be confident and they might misremember bits.

I support the annual refresher, as someone who's done first aid for 10years, I'm only confident in what I do because I've had opportunities to practice, practice, practice.

If you're finding it difficult to get volunteers, ask your provider if they're willing to cover "babies and children", in the lunch hour or at the end of the day; when we did this we found lots of parents and grandparents offering to become first aiders, it became a transferable skill they recognised.
