Hi All,

I am seeking some advice please, with regard to how often a FLT should have a Thorough Inspection.

Currently I have two on site, on long term hire, they are inspected every 6 months by our insurers, and obviously the operators carry out pre-use checks and report any defects.

My question is, are the two inspections enough to comply with loler, or should I be having a yearly inspection carried out by a Professional.

Hi Safety Butterfly

We also have FLT's on long term hire. These are routinely serviced by the supplier.

With regards to LOLER, these are part of our testing schedule which is carried out by Allianz. My understanding is that if they are lifting people then they should be inspected 6 monthly. If they are not then annual would suffice, however insurers may request it more frequently depending on use.

In answer to your question, as long as the insurers are competent to carry out the inspections and provide necessary reports, you should be fine with the 6 monthly inspections, so long as any Defects are put good.

Hi Mat,

Thank you for your reply, our FLT's do not lift people, but it is a condition from our insurers that they are inspected every 6 months, and yes any defects are corrected immediately.

I think from your advice I will have a chat with my supplier.

Thanks again :)

Butterfly, yes as Mat was saying, the inspections that your insurers are doing will be the statutory exams, and they ensure you comply with LOLER if any findings are rectified immediately.

You mention chatting with 'supplier', are they hired? As well as LOLER you still also need the the normal servicing to check brakes, fluids, lights etc

We only have FLT (With fork extensions) .

We examine daily, every 6 months and annually serviced.
Daily checks are recorded of course and maintenance record kept of any repairs needed.

Hi roshqse

Thanks for your reply,

I am currently doing the same as you, this is a new position for me within my company and the warehouse is a little bit of a gray area, I have lots to learn to get up to speed, but I am happy that I am not failing any regulations.

so thank you to everyone for your help and advice !!

My opinon would be the same as above posters except that you might want to check the attachments you use as well. The people thing is pretty simple if you lift a person Eg in a cage then its 6 monthly if no people lifting then 12 monthly. The only problem I have with that is that you dont often plan for people lifting and the inspection rate can often be forgotten depending on who does it.

Hi,

LOLER checks on an FLT is every 12 months or more frequent if required by insurance or company policy. As previously stated if you lift people its every 6 months.
Don't forget that the servicing covers PUWER.

And of course it's all about what YOU assess to be sufficient and suitable.

We only do it every 6 months because it's a large 5ton machine, often worked to it's limit, uses it's extensions about half of the time, and it costs £50 for an inspection.

So would be nonsense to try and save £50 a year and risk a fault developing that none of us are qualified to detect.

Do it every month if you want!
