Hi Guys Can anyone clarify the frequency for PAT testing in offices please? The HSE guidance seems to point to yearly testing, am I reading this correctly? http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/hsg107.pdf

Afternoon jarsmith83, There is HSE Guidance on 'Maintaining portable electric equipment in low-risk environments' published in 2012. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg236.pdf Depending on your environment this may be more helpful. This new guidance recommends testing from not required to 1-5 years. Hope this helps. Richard

Thanks Richard for the quick response, rather than the unwanted and condescending responses given by others :-)

For normal office equipment in a normal office we test every 5 years. We also expect our staff to look at the equipment and not to use it if it is damaged or otherwise unsafe. Annual PAT test are over the top for this sort of environment. If the equipment is used in a harsher environment and gets some grief then we test more often- at least annually.

The IEE code of practice is a much better document - the downside you need to buy it.

The same thought crossed my mind, however I appreciated that maybe Jarsmith has a full and busy life and doesn't spend his empty days on this forum. It would be nice to be able to say "do a forum search its been asked before", but of course the search function doesn't work.

Spot on Walker - Very busy and on the rare days where I do have time to myself I offer advise to others. I have had roles in the past where I have free time to offer more advise on this forum but sever;y under pressure at the moment, so the forum is a very useful tool when people are so kind to provide links, advise etc which can half time researching. Just to add, the search function did not work correctly when I tried using it.

The search function rarely works in my experience. Something IOSH should look at improving I think.

Search function has always worked for me. Without wishing to sound patronising I'm not sure how many people use it properly by putting the correct search criteria in the correct boxes.

The search function has never worked for me. It just freezes up. I don't agree that user error is the cause. It is more likely to be that it works on some systems and not on others.

Forum search is not working for me either. I'm going to start a new thread on this and see if we can get to the bottom of why it works for some and not others.

You may agree but this reaction does highlight the negative reaction of *some* health and safety adviser/managers/consultants. This forum should be used as a tool to find information quickly, bounce ideas and inevitably increase knowledge. The subjective comments should be kept away from the forum as it rarely adds anything to the forum or helps those seeking information. With regards to the search function, if the function does not work correctly this could be attributed to security features and comparability problems rather than dimwits not being able to spell or enter the correct information. So in a nut shell, we should not damn peoples comments on the forum, we should contribute in a positive manner and help where possible.
