Hi Can anyone recommend an iphone app for noise measurement. Mobile engineers undertaking work at multiple locations during day, some of which have higher levels of background noise. Proposing to have engineers record noise levels and record on job sheets to provide information for noise assessment. Various apps on itunes but some first hand experience of use/reliability would be helpful. Thanks in advance

When I checked phone was about 3dB out In reality that's double as loud so a long way out. It's better than the raising your voice rule though, and a reasonable guide, that is much better than no test at all! I would do this - and record exposure and time and if you are anywhere near to 80dB do some more accurate monitoring. I also have a key ring that lights up LEDs to show noise level - it was free, and worth the cost: it is rubbish. But they must do a posh version?

Thanks all Points taken - yes I am suspicious about quality of such apps, hence my request. Often engineers make one off calls and to monitor each individual site would be impossible. Idea is to get some initial assessment in place and see if more detailed monitoring is required in certain types of locations and activities.

More so than the 2m rule as suggested by the HSE?

This has been discussed before and others have previously suggested that they find the app (of course this is actually a combination of the quality of the microphone AND the software) perfectly adequate for at least a ‘spot check’ to determine if a more in depth measurement or assessment is required. I personally am somewhat sceptical and this is not a route that I would be likely to down unless someone could convince me otherwise, and I would be somewhat surprised if push came to shove, whether an employer would be able to justify the use of this in the event of any enforcement action.
