I have been informed our retail staff need 6 monthly H & s training. I believed that this was 12 monthly which is correct?

You are both wrong IMHO! There is no legal requirement to undertake H&S training on a specified time scale in a retail environment.

Many thanks for your swift reply. By saying every 12 months I was looking at best practice and ensuring that the staff would be able to assist in fire evacuation understood manual handling,Coshh and first aid. which would follow for all staff retail or nor, only extra that I thought should be involved for retail bods was how to deal with any sort of threat, verbal or physical. thanks again

Hi I work for a regional retail bakery business with just over a 150 shops including some cafes. I decided to have varying degrees of refresher training requirements depending on the piece of equipment or task after conducting risk assessments. This means we have some tasks/equipment which require staff to be refresher trained annually such as slip, trips and fall prevention, manual handling, using certain chemicals or fire safety/prevention while other tasks or equipment require staff to be refresher trained every two/three years such as baking pasties, using certain cleaning chemicals or certain equipment. This seems to work well as it tends to concentrate the minds of managers into the important areas which need to be controlled as they lead to the most loss time accidents or serious injuries.

Thanks PGra I do agree that some tasks need more regular updating, but cant understand were this 6 month blanket came from.

chillidogg, you need to seek rationale from the person(s) who has implemented/communicated this with your organisational policy arrangements, PGra follows a practicable approach which is how we operate.

No legal requirement based on timescales. 6 monthly? 12 monthly? Wow, even they seem OTT for many industries. A rolling programme perhaps. More than 12 monthly would seem like tick boxing for the sake of it to me.
