Hi, I am drawing up a risk assessment for surveying inside a lift shaft. Any factors outside of the normal confined spaces / electrical isolation that we should consider. Would be appreciated so I can make it as comprehensive as poss? Thanks

Don't forget to be mindful of asbestos. I have been down shafts that are lined with it, that contain pipework lagged with it and some of it was in poor condition too. So be prepared to wear appropriate PPE. You do not say where the lift shafts are so it is worth thinking of the general working environment they are located in. I have been in shafts that had deep layers of dust on the ledges, which when analysed was found to contain a high degree of human skin particles. This was dust that had built up over the last 100 years or so as the shafts were used every day by many 100's of people. If this had been in say an old chemical plant/factory the dust could have contained toxic materials. If the shafts you are looking at are clean then these matters should not be an issue.

Birchall can you provide some extra information, is the lift still in service? If so will you be surveying the shaft on top of the lift on "inspection"? If so will you be survey the bottom floor area from the landing or from the pit? Or is there scaffolding throughout the shaft?

Can I ask why the shaft is being inspected? This is normally carried out either by the lift service contractor or the insurance company. Depending on what the requirement is you may need scaffolding in the pit again depending of the pit depth, and a lift engineer to drive the lift on inspection mode etc etc. More information is required.

You really need to liaise with a specialist lift contractor engineer e.g. Otis, Schindler, etc. If someone has that degree of expertise on this forum I would be surprised.
If all else fails I have a senior contact within Otis I can ask.
