Hi,
a friend asked if car jacks used in commercial activities are covered by LOLER. I've just carried out a search on L113 and couldn't see it in the exclusions which backs up my initial thoughts -'yes, why wouldn't it be covered if at work?'
But I remember someone saying pump / pallet trucks weren't in their before November 2014 when the ACoP was revised so I wondered if anyone else had experience of this matter. He specifically mentioned 'bottle jack' but to me lifting equipment is lifting equipment.
I'd be happy to hear anyone else's experience - thanks in advance

Hi, In my opinion I would say yes, jacks would come under LOLER requiring annual thorough test and examination. To back this up take a look at INDG 434, page 4 last bullet point. hope this helps!

Hi Lana,
thanks - I actually did a google search after posting this and it turns out it isn't the first time it has been asked. Thank you very much though

There have been previous postings in 2014 re Pool car jacks. The HSE's internal guidance for Inspectors states that jacks in use in motor vehicle repair come within LOLER, but the jack in the boot of the sales rep's car does not. See http://www.hse.gov.uk/fo...lops/ocs/800-899/803_69/ para 22 and http://www.hse.gov.uk/fo...s/ocs/200-299/234_11.htm para 8 which is copied below 8 The Regulations should not be applied where risks are low, for example raising someone in a barber's chair, (which, in any case, may be considered as a 'height adjustment' rather than a 'lifting operation'). Other equipment, such as a vehicle jack, which may seem similar to this example, is more likely to involve risk and LOLER should be applied. 9 Sectors will give guidance on the appropriate requirements for the main equipment in their industries. For example: (1) experience in motor vehicle repair of the use, maintenance standards and failures of vehicle jacks indicates that the risks justify periodic thorough examination of this equipment. Engineering and Utilities Sector has advised, however, that it would be unreasonable to require thorough examination of a jack kept for emergency use in the boot of a car, for example belonging to a sales representative;
