Hello All,
Duration of our site induction for contractors on our site is set at once per year which means contractors need to go through the induction every year. Now some people within the organisation particularly the supervising officers are thinking one year is to short and they are suggesting 2 or 3yrs for re-induction. Please can I have your views on this.

If the opertive is working on your site on a regular basis why would they need another induction whatever the frequency? The only reason I can think of why an operative might need a re-induction is if they have not worked on the site for a long period and the working environment has changed significantly.

Hi RayRapp,
Sorry the contractors I meant are not our site permanent operatives, oh yes those will not require re-induction as they will be fully aware of any changes to the building. The contractors am referring to are those that come to work for us on temp basis e.g to repair the roof etc. Some of them could be invited less than 3 times a year, even some once a year.

I agree.
Its always a case of weighing up what is reasonable. A re induction takes people away from productive work, so it needs to be considered necessary.

Ahh, I see. In that case then surely the induction frequency should be aligned with how long since they last worked on your site. If more than a year it would not be unreasonable to give an operative a full induction. If it was say 3 months then a full induction may be a bit OTT - maybe a refresher?
It also depends on the hazardous nature of the site, task they are doing and whether they are being supervised or not. Not sure a one size fits all approach is the best method.

We induct all Contractors on day 1 and then if they come in regularly, we do a refresher every year.
If the period between site visits is more than 6 months we re-induct.

Think this is an excellent answer to the OP query. Nice one, Ray
