I’ve had someone ask for some information they could read about Health and Safety.
Rather than bite their hand off and swamp them with stuff I wondered if there was any advice from the community about what I could give them to maintain and encourage their interest.
She’s a PA who has been expressing a (mild) interest in helping with running the Health and Safety management system in a relatively small biotech company.
I’ve given her the HSE’s Health and Safety made simple to begin with but I was wondering if there’s anything else that you’d recommend that’s a gentle (not too technical or legal) introduction – something that won’t frighten her away…
Thanks
Graham

Is it possible you could pass an old accident/ incident investigation report (with all the personal details removed of course)?
This would show an accident and how the immediate and rot causes are looked at and the information is interpreted, which in turn leads to changes and directly influences company policy, etc.
This would show H&S in action, as it were.

Thanks for the excellent ideas, I've added the IOD document from another thread.
That should keep her interested.

Graham, you could introduce her to the IOSH forums then she can gain appreciation of career, study options and topics etc.

Hi: With reference to the word " ............running..............." in your comments
In the past I have found that PA's especially tend to know things that others do not so I would find out more, if U can, about the real reasons behind the interest before U give away too much as I can [& I bet that many others can as well] give many instances where helpful H&S bods has been shown the door a short time down the line after helping interested parties get to know things - NB: I am not cynical for the sake of being cynical I am just putting another slant on something
best of luck

Thanks for the warning, but that's part of the long term plan.
Getting on as I am and not wanting to leave the company without someone who has some interest in 'running' the H&S system.

I'd suggest also the Australian Model Code of Practice for 'How to Manage Work Health and Safety Risks'.
It is a bit more palatable than a lot of the HSE guidance for lay people and gives a fairly broad approach.
