Hi, can anyone point me to a regulation or best practice document that requires the winding instructions of a lift to be displayed on the wall of a lift motor room please? Thanks.

There used to be Local Aurhority /HELA Circular HELA LAC 50/2 - Emergency release of passengers from immobilised lifts, buit it is not longer on the HSEwebsite. The duty comes from LOLER, and good practice from relevant British/European/Industry Standards. The key aspect is effective training and no poster with instructions can replace effective training LOLER Regulation 5 (1)(d) Lifting equipment used for lifting persons Every employer shall ensure that lifting equipment for lifting persons is such that a person trapped in any carrier is not thereby exposed to danger and can be freed. Guidance to Regulation 5(1)(d) 158 An emergency means of lowering the carrier to a safe position may be appropriate to deal with a user who has become trapped or, where this is not possible, self-rescue equipment such as a rope ladder or an inertia reel system could be provided. There is a need to ensure that the use of such equipment does not make the carrier unstable thereby increasing the risk to the user. The use of emergency lowering and self-rescue equipment may only be appropriate where potential users have received training in its use and are competent to use it.

Thanks Jay, I agree that no poster can replace training, our premises are served by very well trained personnel from the lift companies. All releases are conducted only by then. During an audit though the auditor asked where the poster was. I was unaware of any such need of a poster and wondered if I had missed a requirement.

There is no legal requirement to display such a notice - especially if access to, and control of, the lift winding gear is managed to prevent un-trained persons accessing it! A BS, is, at best, just one way of demonstrating best practice. However, given that there are so many variations on a theme for lift winding gear, it would be very sensible to display a notice that sets out the stages for hand-winding that particular mechanism and identifies [by photo preferably] where the various controls are in that lift motor room.
