Does anyone have experience of H&S at cruise ship terminals? Managing/overseeing the operation of ships tying up, passengers going ashore and back on board ship, luggage organising etc. etc?

I have a potential career change opportunity coming up and need some information.

Refer to HSE Guidance on Health and safety in ports and docks--most of it is related to freight & cargo, but there could be some common topics.

The above refer to Port Skills and Safety (PSS), the ports industry’s organisation for health, safety, skills and standards.

You may find that security concerns get lumped into a port safety role.

If so, you may find something of interest at:

The ship / shore interface can be complex as well, so for particular areas looking at the MCA website may assist.

Good luck.

Covers the Port of Ramsgate loading ramp collapse that resulted in fatalities.

I also recall a similar incident in France when visitors were being shown around a new cruise ship. Ah it was the QM2 and I now feel very old since it happened in 2003. Thought it was only 3-4 years ago.

I remember the QM2 one Steve, also thought it more recent.

I'm more interested in passenger cruise terminals, not cars or cargo.

There are already procedures set up and they work, no point reinventing anything if it works, but just need to know what I need to know.

As an aside some of the baggage handlers receive up to £200. a day in tips. Not bad eh? I may try to get into that side of the work :-)
