I am an EH&S Manager working for a company in the automotive manufacturing sector. We have recently opened a new facility and are looking to implement operational systems there that would make it “best in class”. As part of this I am looking for new ideas that would help us improve our EH&S culture. At present we are very production orientated business which leaves EH&S somewhere down the list of priorities.

Does anyone have any suggestions/ideas they are willing to share?

Hi David,
Have you read the IOSH guide: Promoting a positive culture(http://www.iosh.co.uk/~/media/Documents/Books%20and%20resources/Guidance%20and%20tools/Promoting%20a%20positive%20culture.pdf)?
There is also an ISOH study "Safety culture, advice and performance by Cardiff University (2009)" that you can download from the Books and Resources section of the IOSH website.
I also find that the HSE website was helpful on guiving material on safety culture: http://www.hse.gov.uk/hu...ctors/topics/culture.htm

I would suggest checking the HSE website and read up on PLAN DO CHECK ACT whilst setting up a new operational system and provided you have the key management supporting your positive EHS culture. From the production side, cost is a priority and using the S M A R T TOOL can help you to find the balance between HSE and cost. (My opinion)

Have you considered completing a safety climate survey?

According to Durkin - you can't manage wht you can't measure.

Thanks for the replies. What I really need are actual live examples of some improvement activities that has been introduced to workplace and how effective they have been.

We had little competitions and started with the concept of safety stars at a previous employer- it was lighthearted but it depends on the group of people you have as to what works.
