Is anyone aware of the required retention times for the various records and documentation following the completion of the project?

A question in the latest CSCS health & safety test. Scaffold inspections Temporary works inspections Excavation work inspections Should be kept on site for the length of the project and for three months after the project is completed

It has been in the test for a few years. This is the first year they've got the answer right though. However, that's only with reference to the requirements of the CDM regs. There may be other requirements requiring retention of these (or other records) for longer. I think the question needs to be more specific - our insurers (for example) require that we retain some records for longer than that, and then there are records like certain asbestos work which should be kept for 40 years (I think - we don't do asbestos work).

You're right about the question being a bit vague achrn, what I mean is everything from the tendering phase through to handing over the H&S File to the client and packing up the site. I suppose there would be financial and legal regulatory requirements. Anyway, does anyone have any guidance on this?

Can someone point to the stipulated requirement for temporary works record retention please? CDM refers to excavations, cofferdams and caissons. WAHR refers to scaffold from which a person could fall 2 metres or more.

I read it as meaning retention of temporary works inspection records where there is a requirement for such inspections, not as being that all temporary works need inspection (which I think is obviously not the case, if you adopt a broad definition of temporary works). However, I didn't check the CDM regs before posting and I agree the CDM regs do not mandate a retention period for such records. Returning to the original question, I don't think I'm even going to try to list all the potential retention periods for every potential record in every potential project. The question does not even constrain it to a particular sort of project (the answers to date have assumed we're talking construction project, but the question doesn't say that) or whether we're talking only statute requirements, or guidance, or such things as insurers requiring records retention. I've never seen any attempt to assemble such a list.

As regards main project/construction design documents - as others have said there is no stipulation in CDM. So its down to company policy. Most companies I have worked for retain design document for the expected design life of the facility.
In the oil & gas industry this is typically 25 or 30yrs.

Redders, thank you for asking the question.
As self employed I have kept various records for many many years, risk assessment, construction safety records, site inspection etc. etc.
They are all in my shed which I am replacing next month.
I will now get rid of them all.
Is it OK to skip them I wonder.

For information CDM Regulations 2015 Regulation 24 Para (3) The person on whose behalf the inspection was carried out must— (a) keep the report or a copy of it available for inspection by an inspector for the Executive— (i) at the site where the inspection was carried out until the construction work is completed; and (ii) after that for 3 months; and (b) send to the inspector such extracts from or copies of the report as the inspector may from time to time require.
