Hi all, after some thoughts on the use of vehicle proximity sensors on loading shovels, we have a number of pedestrians working close-by - risk of contact. HSE guidance (INDG199 - rev2) dosnt mention sensors at all, pushing for seperate routes; failing that, use of barriers and signage. THANKS.

How do you envisage that working to ensure safety?
Not compliant with heirarchy of control.

Hi Ron, not sure what you`re saying. Dont have a problem with the HSE guidance, dont realy want to go to the expence of sensors / relying on them as a control measure etc.

JFH proximity sensors are a nice to have but thats as far as they go you should not rely on these but have a safe system of work inplace to reduce the risk of injury or damage

Hi - agree. As per first post (proper) segregation is first priority / best option.

Hi, ref sensors, qnjac guidance on sensors is available - do a google and you'll find a presentation and some minutes. http://www.safequarry.com/qnjac.aspx
also have a look on the safe quarry site, there was some new guidance released a few weeks ago ref waste sites, keeping people seperate, and training/toolbox talks. www.safequarry.co.uk http://qnjac.co.uk/media/1860/guide-to-pedestrian-safety-v3-q12017.pdf
there is an embedded powerpoint presentation on page 12: http://www.qnjac.co.uk/media/1859/qnjac-follow-our-footsteps-tbt-v3.pptx
for HSE guidance, it's probably better to look at HSG 136 for workplace transport, as a previous poster said, segregation is the mantra. There's also a checklist http://www.hse.gov.uk/workplacetransport/wtchk1.pdf
and for more detail, the inspector pack http://www.hse.gov.uk/foi/internalops/fod/inspect/transport.pdf
there are also revisions and testing criteria for visibility. http://www.hse.gov.uk/quarries/hardtarget/visibility.htm
