I am becoming increasingly bemused and dismayed (in equal measure) at the loss of advertising capability on this forum.

The reason, well, I have just spent the last 30 minutes trawling through postings from people who are mustard-keen to get experience in this profession, but can't find a suitable role.

The strange paradox is that I cannot advertise a perfect position (that I may or may not have) for such a person.

I am not a recruitment agency touting my wares for free, but a practitioner working for a real company, in the real world, trying to make a real profit, who may be in a position to offer a part-qualified person a year's work (in a brilliant environment) as an opportunity to get started for real!!

I suppose I could advertise this in SHP or via an agency, but this will take an age and eat into the limited budget available - money that'd be better off in someone's salary than in a 'stripey shirts' commission.

Is there no way the new rule can be adjusted to allow fully-paid up IOSH members to try and nurture some new talent and/or let us members of the gang help each other out?

I will of course be able to advertise any role (I might or might not have) through local branch meetings, but most of the attendees already have jobs or are too senior!

How long before this posting gets 'moderated' I wonder ;-)

Yours,

John

I agree john we should change the name of the careers forum to careers support forum and let people offer positions that would enable others to gain valuable experience.

It is just as hard looking over the fence, when employers wish you had more experiance or higher qualifications?

Not the same as being able to post any potential vacancies on the careers forum but,

If you did have a vacancy that you needed to fill and saw a posting on the careers forum from someone who may appear to be suited to that role you could email them direct with details of where the vacancy was being advertised.

Although this would depend on them having made thier email address visible.

If you did have a position that you would not be able to advertise on this forum, whee would this position be based and in what industry. If you had such a position?

Obviously, "whee" should have read "where". But as there is no job advertised, and as there is no need for me to be professional in my posting, then it doesn't matter.

Striped Shirt Commission ???

When are employers going to realise that some agencies actually provide a very valuable service?

Next you will be calling them double glazing salesmen !!

Yes, there are some VERY GOOD specialist EHS agencies out there, and they know who they are. If I was looking for a new challenge I would contact them too, without hesitation.

However, my (not inconsiderable) personal experience is that there is some utter crap out there too. Usually when you are approached by one by phone, 5 years after (!) you'd eventually managed to unsubscribe from the clutches of their pointless websites, you can tell within minutes that they haven't got a clue....."Oh, my client needs someone who's a corporate member of EYEWASH wiv a NEWOSH cerfiticate in elfinsafety and you've only got a diploma/degree/NVQ (etc etc), sorry."

So please excuse my 'stripey-shirt' slur. The good guys will understand, I'm sure.

AIB, to answer your query,

Hypothetically, if it was allowable to post an opportunity, it would (perhaps, probably, maybe) be in the south of England, in the automotive sector, perhaps.

Agree about SOME of the Agencies being good.

People may have had bad experiences but don't tar us all with the same brush!

Ah, John.

It's a good job that it's all hypothetical, otherwise I'd be disappointed that it would be in the South as I would be, hypothetically, be looking in the North West.

If the hypothetical scenario were to exist, what sector would it be in and what car would it be?

Did you know that 'hypothetical' is an anagram of
'Healthy topic' ?? Not a lot of people know that.

All,

The above thread has caused a vast amount of hypothetical hyperventilation amongst the moderators and web-team.

Whilst we are amazed at the ingenuity and originality of the posters, we have now formulated the hypothesis that advertising has in fact occurred and this is a very real breach of AUG 2.

The thread has therefore been locked.

Now for the scripted bit:

Please use the jobs section in www.shponline.co.uk, the website of the official IOSH magazine, SHP.

Anyone wishing to advertise online can do so at SHP.

For more information, please contact Bryn McGeever on +44(0)20 7560 4227.
