Posted By Philby' to all those who ever wondered/argued or otherwise on the levels of pay related to qualification...have a look at the job spec for a H&S Assistant in a LA in Yorkshire...they want a lot for not a lot...and I thought I was badly paid! Indeed when my current job was originally advertised 2 years ago, many a regular contributor stated that they would not get out of bed for the remuneration...for this particular LA, I wouldn't even set the alarm clock!
When will some folk realise the value in relation to other professions...?

18 - 24k - Assistant H&S Advisor ?
GradIOSH Required
Perfect for a graduate, and they say they will pay and support to chartered status.
Cant see much wrong with it myself? A Graduate who had just received GradIOSH status and has 1 year work in industry would be happy with that i would say?
Unless you are seeing one I'm not

Posted By Craig Baldwin Completely agree, as an employer I know of plenty of Graduates with one years experience who would be extremely grateful for just a job!!

Posted By Philby' ...and the statement in the spec...
'The post holder is required to have attained Graduate Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, and be working towards Chartered Membership, or be a Chartered Member of the Institution.'
There are other positions out there that are infinitely better paid and with better prospects....I can see only one reason for applying, get experience and move on...for those with experience, GradIOSH and Chartered, will look elsewhere

Posted By Craig Baldwin Bear in mind LA pay is historically poor but reliant on the fringe benefits etc..
I would understand your if your were talking about the private sector, but with fringe benefits, training courses all provided with LA employment I'm sure quite a few would set their alarm !!

Posted By Philby' Craig,
I speak from an LA point of view, this statement is of concern to many,
'(subject to Single Status job evaluation)'
bearing in mind our pension rights are already being eroded and job security is a thing of the past
I maintain they want a lot for not a lot, if the starting salary was SO1-SO2 then fair comment, SO1 for newcomers, SO2 for those with more experience/qualification/membership status...then move on!

Posted By Philby' It isn't just asking for graduates...it says 'or'
'working towards Chartered Membership, or be a Chartered Member of the Institution'
there are plenty of Vacancies out there for CMIOSH with better remuneration and benefits outside London and, as stated previously, LA's are becoming more like the 'real world' ie no perceived fringe benefits...
we can agree to disagree...my locals just put up beer ten pence a pint, and the LA controlled multi-storey has gone up 20p a day so I'm asking for a regrade to reflect,
have a good weekend

Posted By ITK CMIOSH Market forces and all that, (too many qualifiers + low numbers of jobs = low salaries) however I bet they don't go short of applicants.
I would have jumped at this sort of opportunity when first starting out.
Great start for newbies, contributory pension, flexible working, generous holidays, 9 to 5 etc etc).

Any one applying go for it, invaluable experience and not a bad wage.

Posted By cara That sounds very reasonable to me!! When I first graduated - 4 years ago I was on less than £12,000 as a Safety, health and environmental assistant!
