As part of a future school building extention, some areas of tarmacadamed play areas will have to be excavated and removed from site - can the tarmacadam just be dumped along with other 'safe' demolition waste or is classified as 'special' or contaminated waste?

All comments appreciated.

I have got to put my environmental hat on here!

1) Scalpings, ie shredded Tarmac is a valuable resource on construction sites for temporary hard standings and can be reused if a geotextile memebrane is placed beneath it. Get you contractor to identify its use or destination for use by others.

2) Minimise the amount removed by ensuring your designers and contractors are assessing what materials may be crushed and re-used, preferably on site, if practicable with regards to dust and noise control of the crusher.

3) The less that is taken off site the fewer vehicle journies and thus less risk to safety and environment.

4) Ensure recycle or re-use by others as options before accepting landfill solutions.

Asphalt suppliers will take planings on certian jobs - the asphalt is taken back to the Aspahlt Plant and re-used within certain mixes - contact the supply company if they will take it back on "return trips" during supply.
Check the Asphalt supplier holds Waste Management Licence (or exemption). Hauliers will likely hold Waster Carriers Llicence - all you need then is a Duty of Care Note - again ask the Aspahlt supplier.
