If you are considering any form of self employment in H&S then I would advise you to get adequate professional indemnity insurance.
With regard to qualifications, it is not compulsory as it is competence that is the issue here. However, I would advise you to get a recognised H&S qualification and quite possibly undertake risk assessment training if you haven't done so already.
Just as a matter of interest, do you already have some risk assessment work lined up or are you considering offering this service at some date in the near future?
The reason that I ask is that if you are going self employed you should seriously consider expanding the portfolio of services on offer.

I am invovled in a particular sport which has recently set out in there guide lines a need to carry out risk assessments the only info they have offered is a leaflet from the HSE. I feel i could offer my services as i have received RA training.
