Posted By David Brede As a worker in the rail industry I am involved in producing and enforcing D&A policies.
These are the key features that you should look to include.
Is it universal or limited to certain trades or professions such as vehicle drivers?
Managements role in ensuring that all affected staff are informed of it
Key messages that employees must not report for duty under the influence of drink or drugs, be in possession of,or consume whilst on duty.
The need to report any drugs or over the counter medicines that you are using
Limits on the amount of alcohol that may be found in an employees breath, urine or blood.
Any drugs that you must not have in your body under any circumstances.
Is there going to be any routine or unannounced testing of employees as opposed to 'for cause'.
Likely disciplinary sanctions to be enforced if any of the above is breached.
That covers the flavour of it so to get some examples you could use the links on the Railway Specialist Group pages to contact committee members who may provide some.

Posted By Claire Coen Derek,
Possible points to be covered within your Drug and Alcohol Policy may include:
1. Who does the policy apply to?
2. Who is responsible for ensuring compliance and maintenance of the policy?
3. State how drink and drugs can affect your ability to work safely i.e. co-ordination, judgement, speed, decision making etc.
4. State that employees must not report for duty under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
5. Employees must not be in possession of alcohol or drugs in the workplace
6. What disciplinary action will be taken if they fail to comply.
7. If you carry out alcohol and drug testing state what the testing arrangements are i.e random, post incident, pre employment etc.
8. State what the employees responsibilities are. For example: Must report to HR if they are taking any medication that might affect their work
9. If the employee requires help or guidance with a drug or alcohol problem where would they get it?
Hopefully this will help.
Regards
Claire
