Good Day Learned Folks,
Having recently embarked on a series of asbestos surveys within the company I work for, I have started to label up areas where asbstos was found to be present.
After one day the scare mongering has began, I try to explain the reason why the company is doing this, and the likelyhood of anyone in the past actually being affected. Though a couple of labourers have just visited me voicing their concerns, saying that they have sometime worked in some of the areas that had been identified as having ACM's and performed the tasks that could release fibres in to the air.
My question is which would be the best way forward with regard to setting these employees mind at rest?

A very difficult one this - it can be almost impossible to alter mindsets and preconceived notions no matter the amount of competent advice or counselling given.
We gave over a similar problem to our occupational health provider, who provided "counselling".
Those in the building trades, or from an engineering background (like me) have probably all been exposed several times over the years, but few of us are going to spend our lives fretting about the possibility of contracting mesothelioma, etc.
At the very least, any exponents of the 'single fibre' theory should be driven out of town, and otherwise explain that unless exposure is repeated or gross, then the likelihood is extremely small?

I belive the corect procedure for employees who may have been exposed to asbestos, under the regs and guidance, is medical surveillance and maintaining records for 40 years.
being in the area alone however is not a criteria for intervention by medical suveillance etc, unless the asbestos is/was in such a condition that fibres were being released into the air due to its condition or due to normal operations in the area...
