Posted By steviezenga hello fats first day at school, new uniform, school tie. to "peanut": grab school tie around the knot with one hand, pull the end of the tie with the other hand as hard as possible until the knot is reduced to the size of a peanut. Almost impossible to undo the tie if done correctly. Had to remove one with scissors last week. Great fun!

Posted By fats van den raad AAAAAhhhhhhhhhhh.... good to see some things are truly universal.Did not have a name for this particular form of torture in South Africa, but the practice certainly existed. Also used to do it to long shirt sleeves when owner was out of shirt during PE. owner then had to attend rest of schoolday in PE vest as shirt was rendered unwearable by "peanut"..... aaahhhhh what fun!!!!

Posted By peter gotch from yesterday's Guardian.... "I can understand headteachers have to beware of taking risks in case parents sue," said John Hadman, organiser of this Sunday's annual world championships at Aston in Leicestershire. "But we have never had anybody injured in 40 years." Knuckles were more at risk than eyes, he thought. "If you cannot see properly because of goggles, you are more likely to hit your opponent. Children in our championships will not wear goggles." Woodlands junior in Tonbridge, Kent, has a conkers page on its website, and no goggles. "We tell the children conkers must not be used as weapons," said acting head Richard Bilous. "In 30 years of teaching, I've never known a conker-related injury." So here we have two authoritative risk assessments based on decades of experience, unless the conkers in Cumbria are inherently more dangerous than those in Kent. Peter

Posted By Mike Craven My colleagues in local government may wish to know that I have just saved the Council a load of money by collecting all the obsolete goggles from the swimming baths (see a previous posting) and giving them to the schools with conker trees!!!!!!!

Posted By Merv Newman Here am I, stuck in an hotel in paris, beside the swiming pool, with only a bottle of beaujolais and a plate of caviar beside me, wetting myself as I read the conkers thread. Keep going mates. This is what safety is all about Merv

Posted By Laurie Yes you can. We used to hang strings of them up the chimney to harden them off. It was considered very unsporting if you were detected. Oh! That's not exactly what you meant? Sorry. Laurie

Posted By RP And one more... After recieving a letter from the local police our local junior school cancelled its termly sponsored walk on advice recieved. Police said they cannot guarentee the safety if the kids and could not support the idea on health and safety grounds(but did not mention what grounds). Another local (national?) tradition gone. Maybe kids should not walk to school anymore

Posted By Jason Gould Cutting feet of kids eh. Well the DDA part 3 will then require the councils to make reasonable adjustments so as children can reach the conkers. End result, branches nailed back on Hmmm.
