Posted By Lorraine Shuker Has anyone got this document? I have had this standard quoted as........ Work surface of the desk shall: Have a usable work area of not less than 0.96m sq Provide sufficient depth to meet functional requirements Provide sufficient front edge space to accommodate the upper body of the user. Rectangular desks- Minimum dimensions shall not be less than 1200mm wide x 800mm deep. Dimensions of 1600mm wide x 800mm deep are recommended. The dimensions of the work surface should be in multiples of 100mm in width and depth. Is this correct?

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Lorraine If no one on this forum can help, you may be able to access Britsh Standards through your public library. I have used my local library to good effect as standards are expensive to buy (especially if you only may need access once or twice). Paul

Posted By Frank Hallett Why is it so important to get hung up on the numbers? Anyway, the criteria quoted are "minima" not "maxima". The real issue is "will the desk be sufficiently robust and have sufficient room for the task that is is being provided for?" Just because a Standard exists doesn't meant that you can only have the standard criteria - risk assessment first, define the requirements, specify to those requirements and then don't allow anyone to impose different criteria just 'cos it's easier to order to a standard. Posted By Nigel Hammond I'm not sure, but I think these dimensions originally came from an old British Standard Document that was written in the late 1980's. I remember using the standard in 1995/96 when 17" screens started appearing and many desks were not big enough. Nowdays, flat screens are taking over. So, these dimensions are unlikely to provide a realliable standard for modern workstations. I have found that most of the standard office desks in our building do not quite meet the 800mm x 1600 dimensions - they are a few cm smaller. I would use them as approximate guidelines rather than a minimum.
