Posted By garyh Ant Septic tank experts out there? How should I treat the waste water from septic tanks? Do I need to vaccinate the personnel who come into contact with this? (as you would with sewage) I should add that the waste water is diluted around 1000 fold with site industrial effluent before anyone could come into contact with it; of course we would take suitable precautions re the chemicals present in the effluent anyway.

Posted By MichaelM Hi Gary Has any sort of ,microbiological testing been performed on the diluted waste effluent? This may give you an idea of what is present and as part of a risk assessment will point you in the correct direction. Michael

Posted By garyh No analysis to my knowledge however this could change in any case; I am therefore looking for generic information.

Posted By MichaelM Hi Gary Coming from a previous life as a H&S Manager / Biological Safety Officer in a testing laboratory oriented company (of which one was a Microbiology Lab with lots of love bacteria, mycoplasma etc) there is not an automatic requirement for vaccination but this must be based on full information on what is being dealt with. Some of the bacteria could be class 3 which would definitely require vaccination. There is a risk that in the event of full information not being available that an incorrect judgement could be made. It may prove useful to get advice from an OH provider or you could informally ask EMAS what they advise. Good luck Michael

Posted By Frank Hallett Good evening Gary. Could you please let us know just how your operatives interact with the liquid? Are you pumping out, entering, or what? What is the degree of contact and how? The answers will be useful and will help to guide an informed response. Frank Hallett
