Posted By MeiP As SIA seem to have stopped answering their phones back in May & I'm not getting any joy from their email enquiries, can anyone advice on SIA events licences. Questions are: Do all stewards at an outdoor event have to have a licences, or can we use a mixture of volunteers & licenced stewards, with of course supervision by someone with a licence? How do events licences differ from door licences? Is there any overlap and if necessary, can we use people with door licences if we can't find any others? (yes I know it's not ideal, but may have little other option) Is there any specific training that pit staff need? And is there still a (3 month?!) backlog in issueing licences or is the security company trying to pull a fast one? Any pointers / opinions gratefully recieved ! Cheers Mei

Posted By Mike Herbert Depends on the size and scope of the event. Not all stewards have to be licenced at the moment but those involved in searches of bags, supervising entry points or supervising of bar areas where alcohol are sold should be SIA at least. If any staff are required to guard people carrying cash or artistes then also SIA. Other stewards should only be there for information and guidance. Any required to diffuse violent or similar situations such as a response team will need SIA. CCTV operators should be SIA also. Once you fill in online form to get info from SIA they will not look at it for six weeks and then send you the forms which are comprehensive and demand absolute accuracy. The form will then be subject to CRB check for some trades. I don't know how long it takes from this point but they are extremely busy trying to register some 100,000 security operatives at various levels. Managers of events or those in a supervisory role of stewards and SIA staff should also register with SIA as non-front line workers and checks are slightly less onorous. This is about the sum of my knowledge and there may be other hoops to jump. Good luck Mike

Posted By Mike Herbert sorry just to add... Door supervisors are the same for indoor or outdoor events. Registration through local council schemes are not necessarily the same and i would advise caution. Pit teams really should have significant experience as this is a high risk area for some crowds profiles. Get advice from pro security team such as 'showsec' or 'show and event' to name but two of the larger companies. Cheers mike
