Can anybody advise me if there is a maximum weight that cyclists should carry in a rucksack when carrying out a task from their employer.

Pete, would have thought this would be down to risk assessment and guidance via Manual Handling Regs.
Is a rucksack necessary or could bags on the cycle be utilised?

Rucksacks will have to be used due to the nature of the work and the equipment being carried.

I always recommend tricycles. They are much more stable.

If you are a courier service your Local Authority is your enforcer and might have some guidance from past cases.
This is worth a look also out of general interest

It explains Royal Mails problems and solutions to PUWER and failure modes occuring in work bikes.
Kind regards
