What is the general consensus about wearing wooly hats under hard hats? is it ok or does it diminish the affect of wearing a hard hat?

I can't see a problem with this myself as long as the user is adjusting the size of the hat accordingly. (Resizing helmet to fit head without wooly hat on etc).
If anything i thought that this would actually offer more protection as it offers a cushioning between the helmet and the head.
However please do not quote me on that, if i'm wrong and i'm sure that i could be then the relevant personnel will let you know.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
Good luck.

Agree with first thread. Can't see the problem with that. After all the hat is being used properly, ie on the head.
In my experience the hats aren't that great insulators and body heat loss through the head can be extremely dangerous.
The "woolly" hat is a comforter and an aid to retaining body heat.

IMHO - perfectly OK, providing as already stated that the hard hat is adjusted correctly, and worn the correct way round.

My personal view is use this sort of PPE should be worn with a correctly designed liner and this should avoid introducing unnecessary hazards.
I have a photograph some where of a gent on a site wearing at least 2 woolly hats for warmth and then a hard hat balanced on top and back to front!
The trouble is that when you let people adapt things they can often loose the plot. Common sense and all that :-)
Trouble with wearing garments under hats? Well one that comes to mind after the need for correct adjustment before and after use. Another is that some under wear will effect how well it remains on the head? Could require a chin strap.
Whilst an American site you may find some of the information of interest @

Not a black & white situation.
I hope that this assists.

OK as long as they remove the bobble first! and the hat is adjusted to fit over the hat - we provide chin straps if needed (that soon makes them adjust their hat bands!)

I do not see a problem with it, but some companies do ban bobble and hard hat use on the grounds of hearing believe it or not. I was told you can purchase specially designed warmers with an ear piece to be worn under a hard hat.

We only allow a proprietory brand of helmet liner made from thinsulate material..this has velcro tags inside to prevent it coming adrift from the helmet and does not interfere with the fit or peripheral vision unlike 'hoodies' or bobble hats etc. It also covers the neck area making it a superior item of wear. Best worn however with the 'screw-back' type of helmet like the 'Concept'.....
