Posted By Alan Hoskins According to Dick on the Dick & Judy show yesterday (what a sad life I lead...) it is now the fault of health & safety that the Tony Hancock 'Go to work on an egg' ads have been banned from being reshown.
He referred to H&S a number of times during the item even though it is clear to most people (I think) that it was banned by advertising standards as being unhealthy because it depicts what they say is an unbalanced diet.
Personally I don't agree with the ban anyway, but that is another matter...

Posted By Dave Adams CMIOSH I thought this was bizarre too. It was explained away by stating that it did not promote a balanced diet. How do adverts for chocolate bars get passed then?
Rant over!

Posted By Lulu From the news reports I saw it was because it promoted eating eggs every working day (implying 5 at least).
Therefore the 'Mars a day helps you work rest and play' would be banned under the same principle.

Indeed, good point.
Conversely I was watching a programme recently about the tragic deaths of people in holiday chalets and apartments due to carbon monoxide poisoning; it was strange to hear how often the words 'health and safety' were uttered in a positive manner. Cake and eat it springs to mind.

Posted By RoseR A friend of a friend of an ex collegue etc told me that Richard Madely had quite a few clashes with H&S at one of the TV companies he worked at ie. was told he couldn't do wanted he wanted to, therefore never misses an opportunity to put the boot in with regard to H&S. It does seem to be a reoccuring theme with him..

Lulu ... it was.
Not sure if it was the "a day" bit or the claims of helping work rest and play that got it stopped, but it was stopped a couple of (few) years ago.
When was the last time you heard that? Shows what a good jingle can achieve.

Posted By Ian Mitchell They also blamed H&S for the decision to ban that Christian girl from wearing a religious ring at school last week on the news.
The rights and wrongs are not for this forum, but once again H&S was used to justify an unpopular decision. Ho hum...
