I've been asked to install a hob in an office kitchen (for very light/infrequent use) but because of the high cost and impracticalities of installing fireproof extract ducting, our contractors have proposed charcoal pad extraction instead.

Does anyone have experience of these - in particular are they:

(a) effective in getting rid of fumes/cooking smells
(b) considered sufficient to satisfy insurers?

Why bother if the hob is, as you say, very lightly or infrequently used?

I can't answer the second part of your question but the filter in my kitchen at home is very effective at removing cooking smells.
