Protection against fire in ceiling voids re light fittings

Posted By Sally Pritlove This is a bit of a technical question for any of you fire specialists out there. Our building has a suspended ceiling throughout. Above it there is no compartmentalisation. We have 11 watt down light fittings that are fitted into this suspended ceiling. Question is, do we need intumescent hoods over the light fittings in the ceiling void? I've looked in the Building Regulations 2000 part B Fire Safety and can't find anything specific. Anyone got any technical knowledge who could advise? Many thanks

You can not find any info on your question because there is none officially.
The way to deal with this issue is this (IMO), if you have identified the down lighters as a significant risk/ source of ignition then take the suitable control measures available to you which may be lighting hoods. Dependent on the age and type of material used to make the false ceiling panels would require a decision whether to replace those panels with fire retardant ones instead. I still find some made of polystyrene.
However with that said if you assess the risk and decide there is very little risk from the lighting unit igniting and then the fire spreading then keep the current set up.
Dependant on you building size, lay out and use it may be you have a compartmentalisation issue though.
