Hi, thought this may be of interest.
Yesterday afternoon whilst driving home, I was listening to a Radio 4 show, You and Yours regarding the Your Freedom website and listeners were asked to call in with their views.
There were two H&S related views, as below, and I must point out that I am paraphrasing from memory: -
“What concerns me is health and safety at work, the things you are not allowed to do. For instance, if I were a primary school teacher I wouldn’t be able to put my arm around a child to comfort them if they had fallen over in the playground, things like that. When I was at school, teachers were allowed to do that”.
“Some of the health and safety laws are over the top at the moment, we need more common sense. We recently had a temp in doing some PR and they fell over and hurt themselves. There was nothing we could have done, it was entirely their own fault but they ended up suing us for lots of money ”.
The statements were not challenged in any way, just read out for listeners to make judgement.
Neil.

Clearly the first example is a child protection issue rather than health and safety, but that is one of the major problems we face: the public generally are unaware of the difference between health and safety, child protection, food safety, equality legislation, etc, etc.
As for the other one - they tripped over that trailing cable, but it was their fault because they didn't notice it... :-)
(guessing again!)
