Hi Learned Friends, I have always been of the understanding that from – BS 5266 2005 it states the following regarding a 6 monthly test which it states its by a competent person: • Daily Test – A visual inspection to identify the system is in a ready condition and does not require a test operation (i.e. Charge lights functional, Maintained luminaries operational) • Monthly Test – A functional test (i.e. flick lights on to confirm operation) • 6 Monthly Test – 3 Hour rated luminaries tested for 1 hour and 1 hour rated luminaries tested for 15 minutes. • Annually – Full duration test (i.e. 3 hour, 1 hour tests) I have now been informed by a contractor stating he has been on a recent refresher course that the 6 month test is no longer required just an Annual one. Is anyone else aware of this and how often does everyone else have them maintained? Thanks In advance Alan

I believe that he is correct, although there may be some exceptions depending upon the nature of the premises. I have agreements to have the emergency lighting serviced/ tested every 6 months as per BS 5266 in all of our branches. However, the lighting is serviced by the same company that services our fire alarm systems and I've negotiated a deal whereby the lighting is serviced at no extra cost, so it makes sense (for me, at least) to keep to the existing schedule.
